Beauty: A/W’13 Trend Report

Is it really that time of the year again? Get ready to part with the bronzing balls and instead opt for one of the many beauty trends of AW’13!

Punk It Up…

Okay, so we knew it already, but this year’s AW13 beauty collection showcased how Cara Delevingne can pull off absolutely any look. This funky-punky trend is definitely brave, but it’s also fun and flirtatious with stand-out lips racing straight to the top of our hotlist. Experiment with the colour of the season and see what shade of purple suits you; here at G&G, we love the deep berry hues! To get the look, apply a thick layer of Smashbox Fade to Black Be Legendary Lipstick #Black Cherry (£15.50) and pucker up!

We don’t expect you to chop those summer locks into a Bert and Ernie inspired mohican – after all, Fendi got creative making model’s headpieces from faux fur. Instead, explore different ways to amaze with your eyes! If you prefer subtlety, use a smudger to emphasise your daily use of eyeliner, followed by a layer or two of Oriflame’s Master Curl Mascara (£8.95) for jet-black eyelashes that are lifted and bold. For the darers, follow Pat McGrath’s techniques and blend together different textured eye-shadows, such as Make Up Store’s Darkness Eyedust #Extreme (£11) to create a twist on the classic smoky eye and heavily line with Clarins 3- Dot Liner (£20).

Back to the 40’s…

If the punk look is a little too ‘out there’ for you, why not take a trip to yesteryear and add some 1940’s inspired make-up to your collection!  Red lipstick was prominent during this era and has remained a classic throughout time with images of iconic women – such as Marylyn Munroe and Elizabeth Taylor – being thought of at the mention; however Creative Director of Estee Lauder, Tom Pecheaux gave the red pout a modern twist. He went for a ‘wine-smeared’ look by using a cotton bud to make the outline a little fuzzy. You can also use your fingertips to help blood rise to the surface for a plumper, sexier look! If you want a 40’s pout, choose Dolce & Gabanna’s Classic Cream Lipstick #Ultra (£24) to achieve the look!

Now here’s a hair trend to try! Voluptuous curls are the way to put a bounce back into your step this fall…it’s time to ditch the pony’s and plaits and let it all hang loose.  To recreate this glam post-war look, opt for a deep side parting and curl large sections of the hair with Vidal Sassoon’s Infra Radiance Curler (£29.99), then brush out. Don’t forget to stock up on hairspray to ensure ultimate shine and hold all day!

Dark and Daring…

Matte skin’s been popular amongst some make-up artists this season, but dare to be different with a dewy ‘barely-alive’ look, as showcased on the runway by models for Gareth Pugh. The key is to use a mixture of cream-based foundations and highlighters to emphasise cheekbones and erase imperfections. The result is a dewy – yet flawless – complexion. Scary Mary? I think not. To achieve pale Goth-chic skin, use NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation (£28) as a base, and then apply Laura Mercier’s Spellbound Face Illuminator (£31) along the cheekbones and sweep down the bridge of the nose to add glow and definition.

An eerie theme ran through the AW13 beauty trends with nail colours matching the tone; burgundies, dark rouges and midnight blue’s all made an appearance on the catwalk! So, whether you’re looking for a shade for everyday wear or a dash of colour for the weekend, you’re bound to find the colour for you. If your nails are in need of a redo, check out Zoya’s (£11) new AW collection, in particular #Sailor for beautiful nails of the night!

Boy Meets Girl…

Every girl should consider adding a feminine twist to that on-trend tailored look and we feel that make-up is the right place to start! The key is to keep skin neutral but to finish with a striking blush that will instantly bring a girly glow to your skin. We recommend Benefit’s Rockateur (£23.50) to ensure that you feel sexy in your suit!

Chanel has spoken! Big eyebrows are still, well, big! Hair in all forms should have a masculine twist; from slick pony’s with bouffed quiffs to brushed up eyebrows. To achieve eyebrows that would rival those of the catwalk, ensure that yours are properly shaped and that any gaps are filled in.  To go one step further towards ‘what’s big’ this season, go for an effortless brushed up brow – achievable with By Terry Eyebrow Mascara (£26).
