There are 1.4m people in the UK with a learning disability.

Mencap works to support thousands, alongside their parents and carers, to fight for people with disabilities to have the same rights as everyone else and to live their lives in the way that they want to! KMS California has a similar view, with their motto being that you should own the rights to make your dreams come true!

That’s why this year – for the first time ever – KMS has chosen to support a charity for a year; and what better charity than the hard-working and inspirational Mencap!

Erin Sanders, KMS Brand Manager, UK says of the partnership: “We are delighted to be supporting Mencap. They help so many people every single day, and it’s great to work with a charity with similar values to our own. The challenge is to raise £20,000 and we can’t wait to get started!”

KMS invited MENCAP’s receptionist Josie to help create a short video. Josie has a learning disability and works on MENCAP’s switchboard which she loves. In the video, Josie speaks of how MENCAP helps people in the UK suffering with a learning disability to have the same opportunities as everyone else and she expresses her appreciation for the support of KMS.

She stresses: “It’s very important to have a job – a worthwhile job – which means a lot to people with learning difficulties.”

“Everybody has the right to achieve the things they want from life!”

KMS aims to raise £20,000 from now until July 2014 through a variety of means, including fundraising events such as their annual dodge-ball tournament and their ‘Real People Campaign’. Hair lovers everywhere should take note that KMS will be donating £1 from every product sold to Mencap during ‘Mencap week’ which will take place this month. Furthermore, a competition will take place to win tickets to Mencap’s annual ‘little noise’ sessions; a series of gigs during November that KMS will sponsor.

They will also be hosting ‘Style Sessions’ which is for young people with learning difficulties to learn basic hairdressing skills to help boost their confidence and provide them with the skills required to make it in the industry.

Mark Mcgoogan, Director of Fundraising at Mencap, says: “We are delighted to be KMS California’s first charity of the year partner. We have some really exciting plans to raise £20,000 throughout the year. Every penny raised will help support people with a learning disability to live independently.”

Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook and Twitter to see how you can make a difference and take part in raising money for the deserving charity – MENCAP!
