London Fashion Week: Tom Ford S/S’14

It would seem that this year, designers were doing a spot of weather forecasting, hinting at a cold Spring/Summer for 2014. We have seen masses of coats, and covered up ensembles sent down the runways at London Fashion Week this year, and Tom Ford was certainly one designer preparing us with his ever-so wintery feeling SS14 collection. Leather, long-sleeves and fur may have been a slight shock for a spring/summer collection, but it sure didn’t take away from the finery.

Kicking off with a completely lust-worthy tan, crocodile skin, biker jacket, paired with a textured leather dress, Ford dished up a large serving of textured and latticed leather, in tan and monochrome. Luxe fabrics were most definitely the focal point of the show, from reams of leather and sheer silks, with heavy mirror embellishments, and hints of fur. There was a hard-edge to the show, with quite a dark palette and an almost gothic feel. Long sleeves were definitely having a moment in this collection. Monochrome tailored suits were belted, with big shoulders, in true 80’spower woman style, and we saw the occasional fur jacket; a trend that is evidently sticking around from Autumn/Winter 13.

Moving from leather pieces, and mesh macs, the show became heavily embellished and intricate. Models were sent out covered head to toe in mirror mosaic adorned pieces, dressed in demure ensembles; long sleeved high-neck tops and shorts, paired with thigh-high boots gave the illusion of a fully embellished body suit. Sheer maxi pieces were coated with cobwebby lace and more of the iridescent shattered glass, mosaic beautification.
An unexpectedly wintery collection from Tom Ford, but one that we are glad to see resorts back to a luxury, which has been really quite lacking in other shows of Fashion Week so far! We sure will be desperately tracking down a crocodile leather jacket come Spring/Summer 14.
