New York Fashion Week: Opening Ceremony S/S’14

The Opening Ceremony show expressed a huge amount of showmanship, beginning with fifteen-odd sports cars being sent zooming down the covered car park style venue, and models getting out of the swanky vehicles, ready to strut their stuff, draped in O.C. creations.
The cars were in reference to the car craziness of Southern California, where Carol Lim and Humberto Leon grew up. Oriental style florals and silhouettes hinted at the loose interpretations of traditional Korean garments, with crossover neck pieces being reminiscent of traditional wrap over kimonos. Against the ditsy oriental florals were some optical illusionstyle stripes and prints, in a monochrome colour palette, with colour pops of orange, yellow and blue.
Like many of the other shows this week, there was a prominent street wear style to the collection, with plenty of wearable and interchangeable pieces that had a quirky edge to them.
Once the models slid out of their fancy transportation, the show began with an overly slouchy pair of tie waist trousers, printed with a colourful oriental design, and paired with a cross-over neck top, which was a key style in the collection. The slouchy aesthetic continued throughout, with printed culottes, and oversized, boxy, neoprene T-shirt tops, contrasting against the structured jackets, and dresses. Harness like strap features were an interesting addition to the collection, connecting the car craziness inspiration, and thrilling opening to the show, through seatbelt-like design features.
The collection was particularly youthful, and exuded colour with structures and shapes that were a feast for the eyes. Quite possibly the collection we are most excited to get our hands on!
