Review: Kathryn Lewsey

Located in sleepy Frimley – a village in Surrey– this gorgeous MacDonald hotel is the perfect escape from hectic city life.

With its original features and pretty garden, this grand hall serves as a great location for girly pamper days, romantic weekends and even wedding. Taking my sister as my plus-one, we checked in at a welcoming reception before heading up to our room.

Sampling the hotel’s “Classic Double Room”, this spacious place featured a gorgeous sink-in-to-mattress bed, widescreen television and comfy chairs. And in the large wardrobe area, we found a well-equipped bathroom complete with all the essentials, along with fluffy dressing gowns and an array of bath products.

Reception has also left us a few weekend must-haves; chocolates and a bottle of Prosecco – it goes without saying that they were greeted with a lot of happiness!

We headed back down to the bar area for a late lunch; both opting for a scrumptious steak sandwich and a cheeky glass of red wine – well, it was a Saturday!

After a satisfying meal, we immediately made our way to the spa. Located in another building just a ten-second stroll away, we were handed the obligatory white fluffy robes and slippers to change into.

We sampled the spa’s facilities, which include a 17-metre pool, relaxing sauna and steam rooms, and a fully-equipped Technogym. Once we’d enjoyed a dip in the pool, we skipped the exercise and spent time in the sauna, before heading up to the Relaxation Room. Dimly lit, this peaceful room offers plush loungers to chill out on, along with magazines, tranquil music and herbal tea to sip.

Both my sister and I were suffering from stressed-out skin, so opted for the S.O.S Purifying Facial. Using a plethora of Elemis products, this powerful treatment combined massage techniques with the brand’s Japanese Sulphur mask, to help rebalance skin and calm irritation.

While waiting for our masks to work their magic, our therapists even gave us to a tension-relieving shoulder and arm massage. The whole process was extremely relaxing and what’s more, our complexions looked and felt amazing.

That evening, we dined at the hotel’s rosette Linden restaurant, which was the perfect Saturday night treat. Featuring around five or six mouth-watering options for each course, we debated what to get while drinking our chosen French Merlot and tucking into the kitchen’s freshly baked bread rolls.

To start, I enjoyed a delicious yellow-fin tuna dish while my sister went for the smoked salmon option. We both ate perfectly cooked lamb for our mains, which was served with potato boulangére and seasonal vegetables. Rounding things up, we decided to share two desserts; feasting on a decadent chocolate tart and generous cheese board.

The next day, we kicked off our Sunday with a delightful breakfast at the same restaurant. Putting on an impressive spread, the buffet featured all the items you’d want from a full English, alongside fresh fruit, pastries, juices and cereals. We ordered tea and coffee, before indulging in the vast array of delicious brekkie items.

Overall, we were both impressed with the service, food and facilities at this country retreat. At times, food service was a little slow; but as the hotel was also hosting a wedding party during our stay, it’s understandable that staff may have been busier than usual.

For scrumptious food, excellent spa treatments and a tranquil vibe, this is a great little getaway.
