Fashion News: M.I.A for Versus Versace

Controversial rapper and fashion fanatic M.I.A has designed a collection for Versace’s diffusion line Versus. The singer has said the collection has been inspired by “Market Stall Fakes” and that’s clear to see, although it has been executed in a respectful manner, paying homage to Versace’s tongue in cheek opulence whilst infusing her own seapunk aesthetic. In a press release the singer said “When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle, Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.

From the campaign shots that look like they were taken on a disposable camera, the whole collection seems to show a contrast between extravagant baroque meets and east London council estate and it all works very well. M.I.A is never one to shy from major issues and we can’t help thinking that this collaboration is intending to do just that, shining the spotlight on the issue of the extreme wealth and poverty we see within urban life. On the brighter side, she has given us some great clothes with amazing prints that we can’t wait to run around the slums in!

The Collection will be Available to buy from 16/10/2013
