At the end of a stressful working week, the perfect antidote is often a simple one: a couple of days spent inside your home, engaging in some deliberate relaxation.
Of course, we all unwind in different ways, and what works for one person might not be very effective for another. But we can still pinpoint a few techniques that will guide you towards the right relaxing atmosphere in your home.
Setting the Atmosphere

Looking to relax? You’ll want to recruit all of your senses. Play soothing music and light a few scented candles. You might think that this means Enya and lavender, but the truth is that the right choice is whatever works for you. Chamomile oil is supposed to be great for promoting sleep, while sandalwood is a remedy for anxiety.
In some cases, the time you spend might be more practical. Decluttering not only results in a tidier house but also brings about various psychological benefits. Take it in small chunks and make it a habit for a few hours every weekend.
Consider all types of self-care
Self-care comes in many different kinds.
There’s the emotional kind, which seeks to promote positive feelings, like happiness.
There’s the physical kind, which provides your body with a workout, or a rest, depending on what’s required.
Mental self-care means giving your mind a rest. That tends to mean taking time out from the toxic behaviours you engage in during the week. Maybe lock your phone in a drawer for a few hours.
Social self-care might mean spending time with other people, or it might mean taking a break from them. The answer depends on how you recharge personally.

There’s also spiritual self-care. If you’re a religious person, this might mean taking the time to reconnect with your faith; if you’re not, it might mean going for a long walk through nature.
We’ve already mentioned one form of practical self-care: decluttering. Really, though, any form of housework can be therapeutic.
Finally, there’s professional self-care, which means making life easier for yourself in the coming working week. You can see this as an investment, but make sure that you limit the time you spend on it to around ten minutes.
Indulging in Comforting Foods and Drinks

Allow yourself to have a treat you don’t frequently have, such as a slice of your favourite cake or a hearty meal from your childhood. The most important thing is that it is something you enjoy, which could be something small. For instance, a cup of quality black tea can be the perfect way to unwind, either alone or in the company of friends.

We’ve already touched on the benefits of putting your phone away. A more involved digital detox might mean setting aside devices entirely and focusing on other hobbies, like drawing and reading.

A spa treatment is, for many, the ultimate way to relax. The good news is that you can replicate many of the most important elements of a treatment like this at home. Give yourself a warm bath, a facemask, and a manicure. If you have a favourite podcast, even if it’s low-brow, then now is the time to treat yourself to it.
