The Hotel Review: Premium Level Barcelo Bavaro Palace, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Review: Helen Ibbitson

The luxury 5-star Premium Level at Barceló Bávaro Palace is an all-inclusive hotel, which sits alongside one of the 10 best beaches in the world. Premium Level Barceló Bávaro Palace is part of the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort which is also home to Barceló Bávaro Beach (adults-only), Barceló Bávaro Palace and the Family Club at Barceló Bávaro Palace.

The signature B-rooms offer great views,  state-of-the-art technology and private hot-tubs. With 11 restaurants (four buffet and seven à la carte) offering international cuisine – you wont be stuck for dining choices. A range of water sports are available including windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and kayaking. For serious land sports enthusiasts there is The Lakes – a world renowned 18-hole golf course (designed by P.B. Dye – the famed golf course architect), professional soccer field, semi-professional baseball field, tennis courts and multi-sports courts – just to name a few of the extensive facilities. For the more relaxation-inclined, there’s an exclusive spa, and if it’s nightlife you’re after, the casino, clubs, and evening shows will be right up your street. The hotel has 4 swimming pools, including an adults-only pool, children’s pool, and semi-Olympic pool.  For family fun there is the Pirates Island Water Park.

We were greeted on arrival by the hotel porters, who assisted us straight away with our luggage, and directed us to check-in. Premium Level guests use the Premium Lounge (along with a whole host of exclusive services and additions) for a seamless check-in service which include sipping on Champagne while being talked through the hotel facilities. The Premium Lounge also has a private and exclusive breakfast room.

We were taken to our room by our porter, which was a Ocean View Junior Suite, located on the second floor (also the top floor) and features a wrap round glass balcony with hot-tub. The room was just a few metres from the beach, where the sea here is protected by coral reef which ensure calm swimming conditions. The room was a good size, with plenty of storage room for luggage, king size bed and open plan bathroom with double sinks and rainfall shower.  The complementary mini-bar included soft drinks, water and rum which is stocked daily.  Beach towels are provide and bath towels are replenished daily. The evening turn-down service at night ensures a well rested nights sleep.

Reservations for the à la carte restaurants are a must and Premium Level guests can also email reservation requests prior to arrival. El Coral Restaurant is great for fresh fish and seafood, there is also Santa Fe (Steak House), La Dolce Vita (Italian), México Lindo (Mexican), Kyoto (Japanese & sushi bar), La Fuente (Spanish tapas) and La Comedie French Restaurant – which is totally exclusive for Premium Level guests. For wine lovers there is La Cava;  a private wine cellar where guests can dine and sample world-class wines, subject an extra charge but worth it for the experience.

Premium Level guests have included use of the U-spa facilities for 45 minutes a day. With a big focus on relaxation and well-being, this tranquil spa (with soft candle light and serene scents of incense) features water-therapy circuit, private hot tub cabins, outdoor pool, hydrotherapy pool, thermal pool, sauna and steam baths, Vichy baths, and a lovely sun terrace with loungers. The spa treatment menu includes an extensive selection of holistic therapies (Bamboo massage), facials (Vitamin Cocktail), body therapies (Seaweed wrap), manicures, pedicures, spa packages and duo packages for couples.
