Trend Spy: Hats Taking Over Fall Fashion

With fall upon us and winter just around the corner, there seems no better time to embrace the hat trends that are emerging in 2013. Not only do hats add edge and character to an outfit, but they also serve a practical purpose, because they keep our heads warm and protect us from the elements.

We have seen hats take over on the runways this season. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Donna Karan with her creations of cozy fur beanies, nineties made a comeback with the baseball style caps, made in leather for a modern twist as seen at Hervé Léger by Max Azria, and of course the sports inspired transparent visors.

There has also been a twenties infusion, with the classic cloche style, as seen on the runways of Armani, and a streetstyle favourite, Saint Laurent’s wide-brimmed hats.

This catwalk trend is quickly translating onto the sidewalk and it is important to remember that when you are choosing a hat, opt for one that is stylish but suits your personal style. Therefore it is important to follow three simple rules, these are: shape, colour and texture.

Colour is an important choice when selecting a hat, you want to opt for a colour that suits your complexion and will compliment multiple outfits within your wardrobe, especially your belts, handbags and shoes.

The most popular colours that have been emerging this year are of course the classic black, the rich tones of burgundy and purple and most importantly the Patone ‘Colour of Year’ 2013—nature Green.

The next decision is shape. Every face is different and many women want a hat for a different occasion, whether it is a day at the races, an evening out, or a casual day time look, it’s important to choose the style that works best for your needs.

These range from the cozy and casual beanie, sports-luxe inspired baseball caps, wonderful wide-brimmed panama and floppy hats, to the refined and classic styles of the beret and cloche.

A favourite texture for the colder season has been fur, for a vintage inspired and sophisticated ladylike look. However, there are many fashionistas who do not support the fur trade and there are plenty of warm alternatives including velvet, wool and felt to get you on your way.

What better way to get rid of a bad hair day?!
