Like any major city, Melbourne is packed with an array of hair salons to suit any snip or colour, so I was keen to sample the Aussie way to haircare.

FB Salons is an independent hairdressers located in bustling South Melbourne and can be found amid a selection of cute shops and restaurants.

Entering the salon on a Wednesday evening, I received a warm greeting from Anne, the owner, and Ellie, who was due to be colouring my hair. With its minimalistic interior and wooden flooring, FB may have the cool edge of a trendy hair salon, but its atmosphere remains feeling warm and welcoming. It’s almost family-feel vibe made me feel instantly at home.

The salon was initially set up by Anne’s late husband Frank Burgemeestre, which points to where the “FB” name came from.  Passionate about hair, Frank used his energy and talent to gain high reputation in the fashion and beauty industry. Together with Anne, they produced a successful salon that’s still going strong an impressive 35 years later.

As I sat with Anne to discuss my hair wishes, she explained the background behind the salon and how they were continuing to carry out Frank’s legacy now that he had sadly passed away.

After a chat with Anne, we agreed that my barnet could do with a decent trim – those split ends were getting out of control – and a general reshape around the face. Anne got to work, professionally cutting my mane into a shorter style that was slightly feathered round my face for a much more flattering finish.

Next, my colourist Ellie mixed up my chosen honey blonde hue. Opting for a natural balayage technique, Ellie took care and precision to place the foils over my strands that would create a sunkissed look.  I was then left to sit and relax while the dye developed…

Twenty minutes later, I was whisked away to the sink area, where the colour was washed away and my parched locks were given a good ol’ condition.

Anne then sat me back down to style my new tresses. Before beginning, she applied a nourishing leave-in conditioner and heat defense spray to keep my hair healthy. Both products were from a Scandinavian brand named Natulique. Completely natural and organic, Anne explained that it’s the only brand FB uses, which works perfectly with the salon’s ethos.

Adding volume and body to my locks, Anne worked her magic with the hairdryer to reveal a ‘do that had bouncy ends and plenty of movement – it felt way more exciting than my usual everyday straight strands style.

Two hours later and I was left with tresses that were lighter, blonder and fresher. But it’s not just the good hair results, FB’s friendly service and chilled-out mood made my experience that extra special.

Delivering fab hair without an ounce of pretentious fuss, FB’s perfect balance makes this an ideal place when your barnet needs a pick-me-up.
