The Beauty Column: Beauty Secrets and Myths – Hair

With a plethora of beauty advice floating around on the net and in various magazines, it’s hard to differentiate the truth from old wives tales. This week I’m going to shed some light on some myths and let you in on a few little secrets that might be worth jotting down. If you’re craving locks Cheryl Cole would be proud of, then keep reading.

hair will not grow

SECRET #1 – RINSING WITH COLD WATER MAKES IT SHINY

Forget the serums and shine sprays, if your hair is a little lacklustre and in serious need of a bit of a pick-me-up, look no further than the cold tap. Okay, shower head. Take a deep breath, pop your head back and let the cold water do all the work. Moisture on lockdown? Check.

MYTH #1 – IT STOPS GROWING AT A CERTAIN POINT

For all you short-haired gals who are stuck in a hair growth rut, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and long hair, too. Look after it, avoid heat, prevent split ends and it WILL grow. Also eat lots of nutrient rich foods to give it a little nudge in the right direction – south.

SECRET #2 – PROTECT IT FROM HEAT

We apply sun cream to protect our skin from the sun, so it’s just as important to protect our hair from heat. It may be artificial heat, but it can still cause some damage. Let your hair dry naturally overnight or apply a heat defence spray generously in a bid to keep it in good condition.

MYTH #2 – IF YOU DON’T WASH IT, IT WILL WASH ITSELF

Gross. I can’t get past day three of no washing without jumping in the shower, so I can’t vouch for this, but I do trust the experts. For people who believe in this ‘natural way of cleaning’ – cut the crap. Adhere to general hygiene people. Washing your hair isn’t a step that should be skipped.

SECRET #3 – ONLY APPLY CONDITIONER TO THE ENDS

If you’ve got greasy locks then avoid applying conditioner to your roots. Instead, apply just above your ears to avoid making it any greasier than it already is. Introduce your hair to a deep conditioner once a week, they’ll get on like a house on fire.

shaving

MYTH #3 – SHAVING MAKES IT GROW BACK THICKER

Razors may have a bad rep when it comes to the legs and lady region, but this claim is unfounded. When you shave you cut the hair at the base, so when you feel that familiar prickle as it starts to grow back, it’s the thicker part of the hair shaft. Shaving doesn’t alter the width or density of hair, so shave away ladies.

Tune in next time when I’ll be shattering some skincare and makeup myths and throwing some beauty tips in for good measure.
