Review: Helen Ibbitson

Recently fully refurbished and situated just 10 miles from Punta Cana airport, Royal Level at Occidental Punts Cana is a 5-star resort perched on Bávaro Beach – classed as one of the world’s best beaches. The hotel has three brilliant swimming pools featuring bars offering drinks, light bites and snacks. The 11 restaurants ensure there are dinning options to suit even the fussiest of taste-buds and include seven à la carte restaurants, two buffet restaurants, two snack venues and eight bars serving super signature cocktails, and some of which on an evening offer live music and entertainment. Should you wish to party ’till dawn, pay a visit to the lively Mangú Club, open until 2am. This hotel prides itself on offering impeccable, personalized service to make your stay that extra bit special.

On arrival our luggage was collected by the porter and we were escorted by buggy to the exclusive Royal Level section of the hotel, where we were checked-in (with glasses of Champagne, and given our all-inclusive Royal Level wristbands. The Royal Level wristbands give access to exclusive services and restaurants such as the à la carte Royal Restaurant and the Royal Level area at breakfast – which definitely offers an air of V.I.P treatment.

The Royal Level has 52 exclusive rooms and we stayed in a Deluxe room with a balcony that provided fabulous sea views from the private hot tub. A spacious bathroom featured Hydromassage bathtub, plentiful toiletries, vanity kits and a rainfall shower. Room service is available 24-hours and the complementary mini bar was replenished daily.

As Royal Level guests, we had access to the à la carte Royal restaurant which overlooked the beach. A tranquil atmosphere to enjoy steak and seafood with slick service. Additional restaurants offered extensive options covering everything from fine-dining (Caracolas offers fresh seafood and has a ‘casual but elegant’ dress code), to cosy and casual (La Fontana Pizzería). Snack bars and buffets are good lunch options and if you fancy opting for Asian cuisine visit D’Oriental,  or for authentic Italian dishes try Via Veneto.

A wide range of sporty activities are organized throughout the day, including fitness classes, volleyball on the beach and aqua aerobics. Bávaro Beach offers the perfect conditions for water sports and these are provided from the hotel including scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking and boogie boarding. However, if you just need some ultimate R&R, you don’t really need to stray far from your sunbed, other than occasionally dip a toe in one of the crystal clear swimming pools or recline on the Balinese beds on the beach and sip on a cocktail.
