The Salon Review:  Crown Hair, Darlinghurst, Sydney

Review: Kathryn Lewsey

Nowadays, there are so many salons that look the same – opting for an identical, almost-clinical style interior. On top of that, there is sometimes an unfriendly or pretentious feel to where you get your hair snipped, making it an overall uncomfortable and awkward experience.

So, my heart was well and truly won over at Crown Hair, tucked away down a side street in bustling Darlinghurst.

As soon as I stepped in, I was warmly greeted and offered a tea, before taking a seat in the styling chair. The salon was buzzing with customers and had an inviting, laidback vibe, which made me feel instantly at home.

With a stylish mismatch of furniture, quirky ornaments and beautiful blooms, the décor perfectly portrays the welcoming, vibrant personality that Crown has. As well as plenty of pretty things to look at, there’s a wall shelf laden with the salon’s favourite hair products that would meet the approval of any barnet expert or beauty editor.

I met the lovely Kathy, who co-owns the salon with Mark. The pair had worked together for years until they decided to open up their own space, which they are quite rightly, very proud of. Kathy decided I’d get two treatments on my hair, before getting cut by their Principal Stylist, Bond.

The lovely Pedro applied Olaplex 1 and 2 on to my frazzled locks. Helping to rebuild the broken bonds in my damaged hair, this groundbreaking duo restores and strengthens strands back to a healthy finish. Once this had been done, Pedro massaged Christophe Robin’s incredible Shade Variation Mask into my locks. Opting for the Baby Blonde shade, this nourishing treatment is great for blitzing out brassiness and getting your blonde back to a bright, shiny hue.

I was then led back to the snipping chair, where Bond took over. With straggly ends and an overgrown shape, Bond cut around two inches off the ends, bringing my tresses back to a chic length just above the shoulders. He then expertly added a slight layer to the front, which helped frame my face.

The salon has invested in Dyson’s hottest new hair tool – an Airwrap Styler – and I was excited to see it in action. After professionally drying my locks, he sectioned my hair and used the styler to create loose, beachy waves. Its’ clever technology means you don’t have to actually wrap the hair yourself – just simply hold it by the section of hair you want styling and it will suck the hair in a circular motion around the cylinder. My mind was blown!

Bond gave me the voluminous, cool, waves I can never achieve myself, before spritzing them with Oribe’s Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray – you need this in your life for the gorgeous scent alone.

Walking out of Crown Hair, I felt on top of the world with my freshly snipped, expertly styled, barnet. A genuine family-like feel and high-quality service really does put this salon way up at the top of its game. And if that’s not enough, did I mention the adorable salon’s dog, Marley? If you weren’t sold before, you will be now.
