Review: Nichola Hirst

Situated in the heart of Manchester’s cosmopolitian centre, this glam hotel is decked out in 1920’s glitzy decor. By far one of the best hotels in the city, it has won an array of awards ranging from Coolest Hotel to Best Boutique Hotel in Europe. Gotham’s Honey Restaurant is also multi award-winning, and Club Brass, the members only (and guests) private rooftop club is the place to hang out for post-dinner drinks.

The Hotel

Hotel Gotham resides in an impressive listed building, which was once the Old Midland Bank. Entering through large and very grand black and gold doors we were met by concierge who took our luggage and the valet happily retrieved our car keys and parked our car for the night.

The Rooms

We were directed to make our way up to the 6th floor reception to check in, where we were met by friendly staff who talked us through dining timings and locations of the restaurant and bar. We then made our way to our room, the ‘Bank Manager’s Suite’, located on the 5th floor.  On entering the glam suite, the showstopper was the imposing, gold roll-top bath which sat grandly in the bedroom itself. An ample bathroom stood to the left of the suite, housing a double sink and a huge Monsoon shower. Waffle robes and slippers are provided. Past the bathroom sits a wardrobe combined with mini bar, coffee machine, kettle, selection of coffees and tea plus extra accessories packs to make your stay at comfortable as possible (Sleep Works pack with eye mask and pillow spritz or Recovery Essentials Extras to soothe a hangover) and also provide any essentials (Phone Charge +Travel Adaptor). In the centre of the bedroom stood a super luxury emperor-size bed, Egyptian cotton bed linen, dressed with opulent emerald peacock cushions and dressed with a luxury fur throw. The Suite also has a desk and chair, and lounge seating area decked out with velvet sofa. Psssssst ….Michelle Keegan stayed in this suite the night before us so you know it’s one worth a visit.

Honey Restaurant

After a relaxing afternoon we headed down to the 2AA rosette Honey Restaurant. Our table was served with warm homemade warm bread and butter. For Starter we had the Padron Peppers and Beef Tartare, both of which were absolutely delicious. Followed by Mains of succulent 8oz Fillet steak, which was accompanied with crunchy green beans dressed with sesame and garlic, along with honey glazed carrots with Tarragon, and skinny fries. The steak was cooked to perfection and all together a dish brimming with flavour. Before desserts we decided to sample a cocktail or two before enjoying scrumptious treats of dark chocolate fondant, served with sweet soy Raspberries, and my husband opted for the Raspberry sorbet and a chocolate Delice , Casa Luker dark chocolate, Passion Fruit and Mascarpone ice-cream.

After the divine food, we headed to the roof top to visit the VIP Club, Brass, the members and guests only bar. Our arrival alone felt an event, entering through two huge, vault – like doors in to cool, sleek and sophisticated bar.

Browsing the drinks menu (which also included a selection of posh cigars), there were many cocktails to sample including Bellyboy Barry’s Bramble and the King of King Street.  Another excellent addition to the bar was the three outdoor roof top areas all having their own theme, my favourite was the roof top garden. We enjoyed a little tipple or three before heading back to our Gotham Suite for the night.

After a relaxing night’s sleep in the super comfy king sized bed we were excited to then try the delicious breakfast on offer.  To start we chose the Gotham Continental selection including luxe teas and coffee, pastries, freshly squeezed juices, variety of cereals, natural yoghurt with dried fruit, nuts and seeds or berry compote and fresh watermelon, pineapple and mint salad. We then added  a cooked option, you can choose from Gotham Full City Breakfast, Gotham Healthy Breakfast, Gotham Full Vegetarian Breakfast, porridge and many more.

Hotel Gotham was a real treat, a visit packed with opulence and luxury from start to finish, we can’t wait to go back.
