Review: Kathryn Lewsey

Keune is a hair brand that I’ve always admired. Founded way back in 1922, the Dutch label specialises in high-quality products for the barnet including colour, care, styling and grooming. So when I heard that Keune had teamed up with Bloom salons to create a flagship salon – The House Of Keune By Bloom –  I knew I had to check it out.

Located on a bustling corner in Holborn, central London, the salon is a huge, bright, open space. Perfectly nailing the vibe of a busy salon with a zen feel, I instantly felt at ease as I handed my coat and sat down on the comfy sofa.

As you’d expect, the salon has shelves brimming with Keune products and if you’re after a barnet pick-me-up, then this is the place to have a browse because they had pretty much every item under the sun.

Meeting the lovely Ronan, I was led over to a salon chair where we discussed my locks. Keen to refresh my balayage tresses, we agreed on a warmer, honey tone for winter and Ronan suggested using an airtouch balayage technique to lighten my hair.

I’d never heard of airtouch balayage before, so it was interesting to see how the process worked. Rather than the traditional approach of backcombing hair, it involves taking a section of hair and then blowdrying it to push out the shorter strands and baby hairs. The remaining hair gets coloured in foils and the baby hairs, which are usually the more fragile strands, are spared from being bleached.

. The technique helps to create a softer, seamless colour to strands, plus it’s way less damaging to the hair.

I watched as Ronan got to work, efficiently taking sections of my hair and blasting with the hairdryer before applying the dye to the remaining strands. Once the foils were complete, I was left to relax with a cuppa while the colour did its things.

Thirty minutes later, Ronan whisked me over to a separate section at the back of the salon where the basins are. Making that hairwashing experience extra special, the reclining massage chair was ideal as Ronan washed out the colour and applied a toner.

After five minutes of serious relaxation, Ronan was back to rinse out the toner and apply a nourishing Keune treatment to my lifeless locks. Finally, after one final wash and condition, I was led back to the chair for a snip.

Ronan proved his expertise once more, carefully cutting away any straggly ends and reshaping my barnet back to its blunt, straight shape.

Next, he added a Keune heat-protecting spray and serum to my newly-cut strands, before drying my hair. He then grabbed a ghd curling wand and styled my locks into tousled, shiny beachy waves.

I was made up with my new honey-toned hair and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the new airtouch technique, which perfectly blended the blonde.

House of Keune is such a fabulous salon experience and really ticks all the boxes. If you’re looking for a new salon in central London, then I can’t recommend it enough.
