A Magical Stay at Dalhousie Castle
Nestled in wooded parkland on the banks of the River Esk, Dalhousie Castle is a grand 13th-century fortress that perfectly blends history with modern luxury. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt like stepping back in time—yet with every comfort you could wish for.
Woodland Walks & Falconry
Our stay began with one of the castle’s three woodland walks. We chose the Wildlife & Woodland route, meandering through ancient trees, following the soothing sounds of the river, and keeping an eye out for local wildlife. It was a lovely way to ease into our two-night escape.
Before heading to our room, we visited the castle’s resident owls and falcons. Meeting Scout, the castle’s ambassador owl, was a highlight—she was truly beautiful.
The Dalhousie Suite
We stayed in the Dalhousie Suite, located in one of the castle’s towers. Entering the suite felt like stepping into history, but with a luxurious twist. To the left was a spacious bathroom with fluffy towels, robes, Temple Spa toiletries, a bath, and a separate shower. A private corridor led to the grand bedroom, featuring a four-poster bed, antique-style furnishings, tea and coffee facilities, and a cozy living area—perfect for relaxing after exploring Scotland.
Dining in the Dungeon
Dinner in the Dungeon Restaurant was nothing short of magical. The vaulted stone ceilings and candlelit tables set the stage for a seven-course tasting menu, which celebrated the best of Scottish ingredients. Each dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully paired. My favorite course? The indulgent dessert.
• Canapé: Red Pepper Croquette with Goat’s Curd, Smoked Muhammara, Potato Terrine, Salt & Vinegar, Taramasalata
• Amuse-Bouche: Crab & Sweetcorn Soup, Citrus Foam, Brown Crab Brioche, Seaweed Whipped Butter
• Starter: Pressing of Scottish Rabbit, Tomato Fondue, Pickled Berry, Fruit Toast
• Fish: Roasted Hand-Dived Orkney Scallop, Finger Lime, Langoustine, Caviar, Velvet Crab Bisque • Main Course: Glazed Breast of Creedy Carver Duck, Pak Choi, Brassica Purée, Confit Duck Doughnut, Duck Tea
• Pre-Dessert: Basil Sorbet, Caramelised White Chocolate, Scottish Strawberries, Elderflower Vinegar
• Dessert: Chocolate & Yuzu Parfait, Dark Chocolate Ganache, Ivory Chocolate & Pink Peppercorn Namelaka, Chocolate Crisps
Breakfast in the Orangery
The next morning, we headed to the Orangery, where sweeping woodland views made breakfast feel extra special. The continental selection featured cereals, juices, fruit, yogurt, and pastries, while the hot menu offered plenty of choice—from the Traditional Scottish Breakfast (with locally made haggis) to Eggs Benedict and French toast with bacon, banana, and maple syrup. Everything looked and tasted delicious.
Relaxation in the Aqueous Spa
Later, we indulged in the Aqueous Spa, a serene space designed for ultimate relaxation. I enjoyed two treatments:
• Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage: Using pure aromatherapy oils, the therapist eased away tension with intuitive precision.
• Personalised Facial: Using vegan, holistic Ytsara products, this treatment left my skin radiant and refreshed.
Afterwards, we explored the spa facilities, including a multi-massage jet hydropool, Roman-style Laconium, Rain & Fog shower, Kneipp foot baths, and a relaxation room overlooking the estate. I left feeling completely restored—body and mind in perfect harmony.
Verdict
Dalhousie Castle is far more than just a place to stay—it’s an immersive experience. Whether you’re dining like royalty, walking the ancient grounds, or melting into a spa treatment, every moment feels curated and memorable.
Highly recommended for couples, history lovers, and anyone looking for a magical escape.
