Review: Jennifer O’Shea

Headmasters Hair Salons have just celebrated their 30th anniversary so I popped in to the Chiswick branch to see the pro’s at work.

My appointment for highlights was with the lovely SJ at the bustling Chiswick salon in West London. We came to the conclusion that a succession of too many full heads of highlights with a lengthy wait inbetween had left me with a build up of colour on the ends and not enough coverage on the roots. As highlights are usually applied using the traditional foiling technique, which restricts the distribution of the dye and is doesn’t allow colour to applied right to the root,  SJ suggested we opt for a technique called Balayage instead. This technique originated in France and has been around for a while, but only recently become more popular due to the dip-dye hair trend, thanks to the likes of Alexa Chung, where colour is applied to tips of the hair only. Previously I have chosen quite light shades of blond but this time we opted for a golden hue to blend the shades of both natural and coloured hair seamlessly.

The colour was painted on freehand and left as usual to develop. About 45 minutes later my hair was washed and a toner was applied to combat brassiness, followed by a conditioning treatment to hydrate and condition. We talked through a few different hair products and SJ informed me what I should and shouldn’t be using on my hair – which lets face it, when it comes to haircare it can be a bit overwhelming with so many options on the market so  it’s good to get this info refreshed by a pro from time to time. Whilst my hair was being blow-dried I got a few lessons on the techniques of curling hair with GHD’s – yes I know every other girl in the world can do this but I have never mastered it. In all honesty I don’t really have the patience, but I did get shown a really easy way to create soft beachy waves, so I was really quite pleased about this little one-on-one lesson!

The staff and stylists were all super friendly and the salon had a bustling, easy going and relaxed atmosphere. SJ really knew her stuff, but also was great at listening to what I wanted, and we all know this can be a rarity in a hair salon. I’d be happy to make this my regular salon and put my hair in the hands of SJ any time.
